The Mazda CX-5 compact CUV, like the Mazda3 compact sedan and hatchback, are not only the company’s bread and butter, but they also make a statement.
As car companies go, Mazda is on the small side, which means it’s always had to punch above its weight and how they do this is with engineering.
Making the rotary engine a reality when heavyweights like Mercedes-Benz and GM couldn’t is one example.
The MX-5 Miata two-seater continues to sell in the hundreds of thousands over the past quarter century, with no serious competitor in all that time, and they did by engineering a light, quick roadster at a price most can afford.
But it is perhaps its Skyactiv Technology for reducing weight, increasing thermal and fuel consumption and lightweight transmissions that sets Mazda apart as a different drummer on overall efficiency, which not only is working but, again, makes a statement.
Always near the top of the list of any compact CUV, the field today has more than a score of choices and that list is growing.
For instance, the CX-5 is the second fastest selling model in Mazda history to surpass one million units.
Introduced in 2012 as a 2013 model, the CX-5 has been a popular choice of auto writers, but there was always a little something missing for some and that’s more passing power.
While the 187 hp naturally aspirated 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G inline four-cylinder remains the standard engine, for 2019 a turbocharged version of the 2.5-litre is optional ($2,000) on the GT model and standard on the newly created topline Signature model.
It produces 227 hp on regular fuel or 250 hp on premium, while torque is 310 lb/ft in both instances.
Fuel economy is rated at 10.8/8.7L/100 km city/highway and premium is recommended.
Tested here is the Signature model, which recognizes that expectations on the compact CUV are rising all the time and a little bit of extra lux and content goes a long way in influencing sales in this segment.
It has a list price of $40,950 and it’s loaded with everything Mazda has in the parts bin, with the exception of $300 for the three optional metallic paint colours.
Of the approximate 40 standard features just a few of which include: windshield projected head-up display (HUD); Bose Premium Sound with 10 speakers with Centerpoint 2 Surround technology; Nappa leather seats; Abachi wood trim; frameless rear-view mirror with auto-dimming and Homelink wireless garage door opener; LED headlights/fog lights/taillights; power rear liftgate with programmable height adjustment, and the latest in connectivity including SiriusXM Traffic Plus and Travel Link service.
Something new on the Signature model is a seven-inch reconfigurable touchscreen display, which is part of the Mazda connect system and includes that now “must have” feature among consumers – Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
