The humble gauge cluster has seen many attempts over the years tore-draw its landscape. From the Knight-Rider-esque all-digital GM dashes of the 80s, to the analog-digital hybrids of the 90s, and the more recent stylings that have featured large traditional dials interspersed with small,high-res graphics windows, and more and more information being projected on to the windshield in head-up displays. Each of these designs tried to find a new balance between the all-important speed readout, and the ever-growing list of supporting data. Some were more successful than others. But now that we’ve officially entered the era of the all-monitor dashboard, in which every conceivable data point can be given exactly the treatment it deserves — and modified at the driver’s whim — what’s next? If Hyundai’s Genesis marque is any indicator, 3D is about to (once again) change our perception of our vehicles’ interiors.
For now, there’s not a lot of information to go on. What we know is that the Korean-market 2019 G70 sedan will come equipped with a 12.3-inch, 3D digital instrument cluster that has several available modes to choose from, and can revert to a traditional 2D display if the driver prefers.
3D displays are notoriously difficult to get right. Both in theatres and at home, we’ve relied exclusively on active and passive glasses to achieve the 3D effect for movies. These technologies work by ensuring each eye receives the slightly different images that our brain is able to stitch together into a view that includes the perception of depth — otherwise known as parallax. It’s convincing for most people, but it not only relies on special glasses and a special display, it often fails when you’re not looking straight ahead.
We’ve had auto stereoscopic video displays (which don’t require 3D glasses) for more than a decade, but these are even more problematic. For the 3D effect to work, the viewer’s head must occupy a predetermined “sweet spot,”at a specific distance and height from the display. Move out of this 3D zone, and the perception of depth is replaced by a decidedly blurry image. The Nintendo 3 DS portable game system used this technology, but relied on a slider to adjust the 3D effect.
