Vehicles to Look out for in 2019

We’ve covered the cars we loved and the cars that most disappointed us last year, and now it’s time to turn our attention to this year. Of all the new cars in the pipeline for the upcoming year, these are the ones we are most looking forward to driving in the coming year. By the end of next year, which of them will end up on our favourites list, and which will end up in the disappointments pile is anyone’s guess.

I suspect I won’t be alone when I say the car I most want to drive next year is Chevrolet’s new C8 Corvette. But beyond the cheap thrill of putting the new mid-engined ‘Vette through its paces on some exotic racetrack, what truly captivates my interest is the question of how it will fare against the rest of the supercar world.

In fact, my interest is more academic than lustful. I am, all cards on table, not a die-hard Corvette fan. I have never owned one nor have I dreamed of doing so. What does interest me is the simple, straightforward question of whether Chevrolet really can, as has always been the company’s contention, build a supercar equal to the Europeans “if we really wanted to.”

As the lore goes, while the rest of the true supercar world moved to the mid-engine layout long ago, General Motors retained the Corvette’s classic front engine/rear drive layout out of loyalty to its stubbornly hidebound clientele. Now, for whatever reason — pressure to compete, a change of the engineering guard or just the fact that its traditional buyers are dying off — The General is getting with the program.

So, no more excuses. No more we could if we wanted to. The C8 will either prove that American engineering is equal — or, praise the Lord and pass the supercharger, superior — to Continental nous or Detroit will finally have to admit that Maranello knows something it doesn’t. I’m eager to find out.

I’ve been driving for more than 45 years now and I’ve spent the majority of that time testing various manufacturers’ new models and writing about them — truly the greatest job in the world (or so I’ve been told by friends and strangers alike). As much as I love sports cars — especially pricey Aston Martins and Porsches — I feel the need to do penance for all the gasoline extravagantly burned. Plus, I admit a certain curiosity to how well its new AWD-e system will work during a Canadian winter. So, I am looking forward to testing Toyota’s new Prius hybrid during the New Year. Already efficient — with projected fuel economy ratings of 4.5 and 4.9 L/100 km (city/highway) — Toyota estimates the AWD-e model could account for as much as 65 per cent of annual Canadian Prius sales.

The car uses an independent electric rear motor to power the rear wheels from zero to 10 km/h, then when needed, up to 70 km/h. According to Toyota, the system provides the power to the rear wheels to pull away from a stop, yet the on-demand system recognizes when AWD performance is not required to provide better fuel economy. We’ll see!
