We often talk about driving range in regards to electric vehicles, but it can be an important metric for gasoline-powered cars as well. When you're on a road trip, how far you go between fillups can be a pivotal factor for planning your stops, and generally the longer the range the better. Plug-in hybrids combine a fuel tank and a gasoline engine with an electric motor and an onboard battery, so there are lots of different elements to consider in terms of range. That's where our real-world testing comes in.
We test vehicles on a 75-mph real-world highway loop, calculating a range number based on fuel tank capacity and the vehicle's fuel-economy result. We also measure observed electric range when running only on battery power. What follows is a list of the plug-in hybrids we've tested with the most overall range when you combine gasoline and electric power. Keep in mind that replicating these numbers would require a full tank of gas and a full charge on the battery, so it would only be achievable repeatedly on a trip if you're able to fully charge the battery during your stops.

Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid: 472 Miles
Many of today's entrants in the popular compact SUV segment offer plug-in-hybrid powertrains, and the Ford Escape is one of them. It offers good fuel economy and decent EV range, but its relatively small fuel tank keeps it low on this list in terms of overall range. It's also only offered with front-wheel drive, as opposed to many rivals that can be had with all-wheel drive.

Toyota RAV4 Prime: 492 Miles
The Toyota RAV4 is one of the bestselling vehicles in the U.S., and its plug-in-hybrid Prime variant is the quickest and most expensive model in its wide-ranging lineup. Despite getting to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds in our testing, it's also remarkably efficient and can go far on a fully charged battery.
