Canada's best-selling auto brands, cars, pickups, and SUVs in 2023
Overall auto sales were up by more than 12 per cent, but which vehicles ended the year on top?

In Canada, 1.7 million new vehicles were delivered in 2023. That's a four-year high, albeit a total that's 7-per-cent lower than the 10-year pre-pandemic average.
Canadian car-buying tastes are undeniably evolving, moving very gradually toward pure electrics along with an increased appetite for hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Yet many traditional elements of the automotive industry persist: despite high energy costs, high prices, and high interest rates, full-size pickup truck sales grew 6 per cent in 2023.
Overall auto sales, however, were up by more than 12 per cent. Subaru, Mazda, Volkswagen, Kia, Nissan, Honda, and Chevrolet were among the high-volume brands that grew sales at an above-average rate.
Which auto brands led the way? Which pickup trucks were most popular? In an SUV-crazed market, which utility vehicles topped the sales charts? And in an increasingly less consequential car market, are the top sellers the same as ever? For calendar year 2023, these were the five best-selling auto brands, the five best-selling trucks, the five best-selling SUVs and crossovers, and the five best-selling cars in Canada.

5. Honda: 112,535, up 22 per cent
2023's bounce back didn't entirely cancel out Honda's 30 per cent loss in 2022, but a surge in CR-V output and increases from the Accord, HR-V, Odyssey, and Pilot at least allowed Honda to move forward, not backward. At 6.6 per cent market share, Honda remains well back of the brand's 8.8 per cent pre-pandemic share.
4. Hyundai: 115,668, up 3 per cent
To top its Honda rival for a second consecutive year, Hyundai produced meaningful sales increases with five different utility vehicles: Ioniq 5, Palisade, Santa Fe, Tucson, and Venue. What stopped Hyundai from putting up bigger overall numbers? Like most auto brands that still sell sedans and hatchbacks, passenger car volume disappointed yet again. Combined, the Elantra and Sonata alone shed over 5,000 sales.
