A four-cylinder 2.0-litre unit with 155 horsepower was the standard engine, while an optional 2.5-litre unit developed 184 horsepower. Both six-speed manual and traditional automatic transmissions were offered, but the automatic version was, and still is, more popular.
The trim designations started at the entry level GX, GS was the mid-range and GT represented the top of the line. It was offered in both sedan and hatchback configurations with the latter bearing a 'Sport' badge.
